Ever wonder what snacks a Dietitian takes on a road trip?

About 2 weeks ago, we took our first ever road trip to visit my brother in the states. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about having 2 kids in the car for more than 4 hours.

My (almost) sister-in-law requested samosas, so on our way, we stopped by a shop in Brampton.

Now who can resist the smell of warm samosas?

I definitly couldn't... so at 10 in the morning, we enjoyed a samosa (or two 🤤) as we continued on our journey and they were delicious! (side note: I also learned that there are machines that make samosas now! 🤯)

About 2 hours later, we got to the boarder, where we had to wait almost an hour to cross, so we decided this was a good time to eat "lunch".

Lunch was more of a snack in the car. I had packed some fruit - apple and pear slices, grapes and strawberries and offered it to the kids, which they enjoyed.

Get ready for this shocker....

and then we opened a bag of chips. Yes me, as a Dietitian, eats chips...and even feeds them to her family. In my world, there are no foods that are off limits and chips have always been a must for any road trip I'm on. They were delicious and were exactly what I needed in that moment.

Can you imagine what it feels like to enjoy foods without guilt and fear? It's such a game changer!

Once we got across the border and drove a bit longer, we got out for a bathroom break and also needed to charge our car, so we took a little stroll and enjoyed a few baked sweet potato rounds that were leftovers from our dinner the night before. My kids didn't eat much and I respected that. I'm sure they were still full from the snacks we had not long ago.

A little while after that, I offered them some sliced cucumbers. When I say they love cucumbers...I mean they LOOOOVE cucumbers.

...my daughter proceeded to take a nap and my son went into a deep dive studying his pokemon cards. I swear, he studies them like he's about to write a licensing exam that will result in him finally becoming a 'Pokemon Master'. (if you know, you know)

We were finally into the home stretch of our trip. I was so surprised. My husband and I argued more than the kids! The kids barely whined and we hardly got the never ending question "Are we there yet?".

It went well!

So there you have it...the snacks we enjoyed on this road trip.

Here are some other great ideas for your next road trip:

➡️ individual yogurt cups or drinkable yogurts

➡️ trailmix (with nuts, dried fruits, cereal, etc.)

➡️ granola bars

➡️string cheese

➡️homemade muffins

Maybe one day I'll tell you about my first time at Trader Joe's and the snacks we picked up for our return trip...

P.S. I want to leave you with a parenting tip that I believe really helped us keep our sanity as we drove for more than 5 hours (with an hour weight at the border).... ground your child's feet. It's uncomfortable for our littles to have thier legs dangling for a long time.

🙋🏽‍♀️ If you're a short person like me, you get it!

For my 7 year old, that meant having a folding stool for him to rest his feet on and for my 3 year old, she had a duffle bag that fit perfectly. If you're kids are squirming at the dinner table, try this out and let me know how it works out for you!

P.S.S. It's been 6 years since Hello Nutrition was born....a little hope and dream to make this into something amazing and just last week, Hello Nutrition is officially INCORPORATED!! Like hot damn - I really am girl-bossing it up hard! Sometimes I can't even believe I'm a grown up, with little people who I am suppose to be responsible for....it's just crazy!

Stay tuned for some BIG moves coming up from Hello Nutrition Inc.!! eeek I'm so excited! 🤩
