This summer I attended a few "Feed Your Brain" webinars with Doug Cook (a Toronto based Dietitian who specializes in brain health).
Brain health was never a focus in my nutrition schooling.. probably because there wasn't much research on it back then, but WOW have things come a long way!
Did you know that your brain need 40+ nutrients each day to function well?
And guess what controls your mood, impacts your mental health, ability to multi-task, problem solve, helps you remember stuff, and of course impacts reasoning and judgement..
yup, obviously your brain!
One of the most prominent take-aways that I took from these sessions was about the importance of Omega-3s for our brain health.
Omega-3s help:
✅ increase blood flow
✅ decrease inflammation
✅ create good healthy brain cells so the brain functions better
✅ decrease mood and depression
✅ decrease cognitive decline (dementia and Alzheimer's risk)
I also learned that according to the latest CCHS data, about 90% of Canadians are not meeting their recommended daily intake of omega-3s...🤯! (average intake is 140 mg, and the recommended intake is 500mg)
To be clear: I am a "food first" dietitian, meaning that I will ALWAYS promote real food over supplements.
But I'm learning to accept that sometimes it's just not possible to meet our nutrition needs everyday through real food and that's where a good quality supplement can help fill the gap.
Omega-3s are one of those nutrients that our brain really thrives with, but it can be challenging to eat enough of every day.
And the best part is that there's really no downfall to the supplementation of it. You have everything to gain, and honestly, nothing to really lose.
